My desktop hard drive is continuously making odd noises. It turns really loud and when we tap on it, it stops. It comes back after a while, over, and over. What is the problem?

It's model EL1331-05 Emachines with an AMD Athlon 2850e processor, NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE Integrated, 320 GB HDD, and 3 GB DDR2 memory.

are the screws tight? is the drive like.. flat, instead of at an angle or something?
what if you put a small piece of fabric between the hard drive and the case?

is the noise inside the hard drive or outside it?

Yes, the screws are fine and it is flat. I don't think any fabric was in the hard drive...
and the noise is coming from the inside.

ooh. try tightening all the wires into it and make sure it's not just vibrating against something.

there's not much else to do, sounds coming from the HD usually = bad sign

just as a precautionary, you should back up everything important you have on the computer.. last time my HD made noises, it died pretty quickly.

my HD didn't make the same noises you did, though, so.. ;x

just back up anyways
