Well, for just going through the game, I'd suggest getting Torchic for a starter and EXP Share training a Slakoth once you can. Don't know what other advice to give, sorry. May have better tips tomorrow.

It's hard to say one team is better than the other. Just pick whatever pokemon you want for the normal gameplay. ^,^ For the Battle Frontier, Stage 3s are some of the best. Like Metagross, Salamence, Dragonite, etc.

For normal gameplay, go with Despair and Banned4(do evolve the Shroomish to Breloom ofcourse)

So you should have:

Torchic - Blaziken(eventually)
Slakoth - Slaking(eventually)
Shroomish - Breloom(eventually)

Aside from that, try catching a Ralts, and evolve it into a Gardevoir. That will really help.
Also, some sort of strong water type pokemon would be a good choice to add to your team. I suggest Wailmer/Wailord, though there are others. Lotad/Ludicolo may be a good choice as well, though you'd need a Water stone I believe to evolve it to it's final form.
