I have an idea that what you meant by gold is money. Sadly the money you gain in the game can only be used for buying and swapping pokemons.

If you're talking about Gold as in Money, there's no other purpose for it than to Buy Pokemons and for Secret Swaps and Seafoam Island entry fee.

If you're talking about Golden Pokemons, however, other than selling it - which in my opinion is ineffective - you can trade it, since its value is very high and you can get high level Pokemons just by trading it. Also, as mentioned by someone earlier, they have also better stats from the additional 15 points bonus. Having a Golden also makes you look "cooler" and less of a noob - unless you traded them unworthy of their rate - then the otherwise happens. >.>
